At SONDER architecture + design, our mission is to serve our clients and local community by generating thoughtful, creative, and forward thinking solutions to the architecture and design projects in which we have the privilege of being engaged. We work with you and your team to develop your vision into a built reality that people can experience and enjoy. From ground up construction to interior renovation and fit-outs, we guide you through all phases of the design and construction process.

SONDER architecture + design is a comprehensive architecture and design firm that offers a range of services. Our expertise includes commercial and retail spaces, tenant fit-outs, and both single and multi-family projects. Our principals are certified by the National Council of Architecture Registration Board (NCARB) and are active members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), holding architectural licenses in multiple states.

We are dedicated to fostering the ongoing growth and improvement of our design team through a culture of mentorship, continuing education, and professional development.

Located within Pittsburgh's dynamic historic Northside community, our studio is strategically positioned along the scenic North Shore of the Allegheny River. The area is home to a wealth of inspiring museums, restaurants, and stunning city vistas, as well as a rich architectural history that serves as a constant source of inspiration for us.

 
 

Our Team

Nathaniel r. orr, aia, ncarb

FOUNDER | MANAGING PARTNER

Born and reared in Pittsburgh, PA, Nathaniel Orr graduated Cum Laude from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University school of Architecture & Urban Studies in 2006 (ranked #1 Undergraduate Architecture School in the nation in 2007 by Design Intelligence). In his 4th year of  undergraduate studies, he was invited to be one of only 30 selected students from his class to participate in the Design Travel Program. During this opportunity, Nathaniel traveled and lived in 68 cities throughout Europe and South America, studying architecture, drawing, photography, and design. 

Upon graduating from Virginia Tech, his love for the outdoors and fly-fishing drew him to Montana, where he accepted a position as an apprentice architect at a mid-sized architecture and engineering firm.

In 2009 he relocated back to Pittsburgh, PA after accepting a position at an award-winning architecture practice where he thrived as a lead designer and project manager in general commercial & hospitality projects.

During his 16 years of post-graduate experience as a designer, and eventually a Registered Architect and firm owner, Nathaniel has been a Lead Designer and Project Architect of multiple award-winning projects.  His expertise includes hospitality & restaurant design, general commercial, high-end fashion retail, contemporary residential, and airport concession projects.

PROJECT ARCHITECT | PARTNER

After growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, Chris Bonadio set off for Ohio to study architecture at Kent State University.  The college of Architecture & Environmental Design's rich history helped shape him into a well rounded architect studied in design, theory, practice management, and construction administration.  Chris graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's and Master's degree of architecture.

During his 3rd year, he lived and studied abroad in Florence, Italy at the school's historic Palazzo dei Cerchi studio.  During which, he was able to travel through Italy and western Europe.

After school, Chris moved back to Pittsburgh to start his professional career in his home town.  He has worked at various firms as a designer and project manager, allowing him to develop his expertise as a multi-faceted architect capable of design, project management, and construction administration.  In his time working in Pittsburgh, he is proud to have been a key contributor to a variety of projects built around the city. 

Chris joined Sonder specializing in general commercial, retail, restaurant, multi-family housing, and residential design.

 
 

alejandra baca

PROJECT DESIGNER | REVIT MANAGER

Alejandra was born and raised in Managua, Nicaragua. She studied Architecture there and graduated in 2017 Magna Cum Laude. In Managua, she worked for a small architecture studio as a design architect for 5 years, with a focus on residential projects. In 2018, Alejandra relocated to Madrid, Spain where she’s been practicing as a freelance architect/designer. In addition to her expertise as an architectural consultant, Alejandra pursued her certification as an Autodesk Certified Professional in 2019 and subsequently a Certified Instructor for Revit Architecture in 2021. She has been teaching architecture and design software since 2018 while working with various training centers and design schools in Madrid. 

When Alejandra is not in the design studio, you will likely find her at metal and indie rock venues, art exhibitions, and enjoying city life with her friends.

Alejandra specializes in general commercial, residential, retail, and is an all around architectural production rockstar.
